ROSAT observations of A0538-66 during quiescence

چکیده
Wediscuss serendipitousROSATobservations of the Be transient A0538-66, which contains the fastest known accreting X-ray pulsar (69 ms). We show that this transient is detected several times during quiescence at a level of about 1034−35 erg s−1. Considering this low luminosity it is more likely that X-rays are produced by matter falling onto the neutron star magnetosphere, rather than onto the star surface. This could be the first example of an X-ray source in the “propeller regime”.

Chandra observations of the millisecond X – ray pulsar IGR J 00291 + 5934 in quiescence
In this Paper we report on our analysis of three Chandra observations of the accretion– powered millisecond X–ray pulsar IGR J00291+5934 obtained during the late stages of the 2004 outburst. We also report the serendipitous detection of the source in quiescence by ROSAT during MJD 48830–48839 (July 26–August 4, 1992). The detected 0.3–10 keV source count rates varied significantly between the C...
متن کاملOptical and ROSAT X-ray observations of the dwarf nova OY Carinae in superoutburst and quiescence
We present ROSAT X-ray and optical light curves of the 1994 February superoutburst of the eclipsing SU UMa dwarf nova OY Carinae. There is no eclipse of the flux in the ROSAT HRI light curve. Contemporaneous ‘wide B’ band optical light curves show extensive superhump activity and dips at superhump maximum. Eclipse mapping of these optical light curves reveals a disc with a considerable physical...
متن کاملOn the Stability of the 421 - day Periodicity in A 0538 – 66
In this paper we analyse 70 years of archival Harvard and Schmidt plate data of the 16.6 d Be X-ray binary A0538–66 in order to search for the presence of the long-term period of 420.82 ± 0.79 d found in MACHO photometry (Alcock et al. 2001). We find evidence for a long-term period of 421.29 ± 0.95 d in the archival data, and examine its stability. We also combine the archival and MACHO dataset...
متن کاملX - ray and optical follow - up observations of the August 1998 X - ray transient in NGC 6440
The BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras detected a transient in NGC 6440 on 1998 Aug 22. ROSAT did not detect this source on 1998 Sep 8, indicating that the X-ray flux had decreased by a factor 400 at least, and/or that the X-ray spectrum had become appreciably softer. Analysis of archival ROSAT HRI data reveals two sources associated with NGC 6440; one of these may be the transient in quiescence. We h...
متن کاملAn eclipse of the X-ray flux from the dwarf nova OY Carinae in quiescence
We present a phase-resolved ROSAT HRI X-ray light curve of the dwarf nova OY Car in quiescence. The X-ray flux is eclipsed at the same time as the optical eclipse of the primary, and the region of X -ray emission is comparable in size to the white dwarf. We use subsequent optical observations to update the orbital ephemeris of the system.
